Homecoming 2011-To Be Out of This World
It’s time to put Oct. 7-9 on your calendars…in pen. Students chose ‘Out of This World’ for the homecoming theme, and the schedule proves this could be one for the books.
Check out http://www.mhc.edu/alumni/homecoming/schedule to visit the homecoming page and see a full schedule. Here are a couple highlights to look forward to:
Thursday
Chili cook-off, Lion’s Growl & Pep Rally, and a dance to end the night!
Friday
Chambers Gym will hold a delicious BBQ dinner and a jammin’ beach music concert by the Imperials (composed of MHC alumni) at 6:00pm. Dinner will be $10 for adults and $5 for children.
Saturday
Though there will be no parade like in the past, CAB has put together a Festival on the Quad for students to showcase their organizations and for vendors to provide products for viewing and purchasing. The Bailey Mountain Cloggers will perform at 11:30am, 12:00pm, and 12:30pm. There will be oversized inflatable games for kids of all ages.
Enjoy lunch on the quad in the midst of the fun. Buy a locally made pottery bowl and eat your bbq from it! Then pour local apple butter on your cornbread, and bask in the sunshine by the fountain. This will be a great start to a wonderful Saturday watching the Lions football team take home the victory!
Sunday
If you sang in the choir at Mars Hill Baptist Church during your years as a student, join them again on Sunday, Oct. 9th to celebrate Mars Hill Baptist’s 155th Anniversary! They will be singing Martin Shaw’s “With a Voice of Singing”. Dr. Joel Reed, Chair of the Music Department and Professor of Music at Mars Hill College, will be leading this anthem in worship. Rehearsal will be at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary of Mars Hill Baptist Church, 67 North Main Street. For more information or to notify the church of your intent to sing, please contact, Sharon Welsch, Associate Pastor at 828/689-2911 or by email at marshillbc@frontier.com.
We’ll see you soon for Homecoming 2011!
To Bailey Mountain, and ‘The Hill,’ With Love
I ran across this poem written by alumna Beth Bridges from the class of 1951, and I was overwhelmed at how Beth captured how I felt about Mars Hill in a way I never could. She wrote a poem about Bailey Mountain in 1951, and this is a sequel she wrote 50 years later.
Here it is, dear alumni, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
To Bailey Mountain, and ‘The Hill,’ With Love
By Beth Bridges
Once, years and years ago-
Or, it seems, only yesterday-
I saw my first mountain.
Not particularly high or grand,
But to a Florida child
Something so perfect-
So magical-
I climbed up its autumn slopes
Panting and straining my aching legs
For what seemed hours,
To lie, finally stretched out and breathing hard
In the lap of its highest grass meadow.
This was the beginning-
The first day
Of an enchantment. From then on
For a timeless time
I tasted a joy
So piquant, so delicious
I never tasted the like of it again.
Dear old mountain,
I think it was you-
Your permanence, your dignity-
That gave such radiance
To all the bits of life
At your feet.
Half a century may seem a long time
To fireflies like ourselves
Who light up a nano-second
With our glint.
We come and go,
But I’m still here to say
Those years at your feet
On that small patchwork of learning–
Those buildings we called “The Hill–
Were the essence-
The very definition
Of happiness.
In all these fifty years
I’ve never solved the mystery
Of why,
So I won’t try,
But I know
As sure as anyone knows anything
That all of life that followed
Was hung upon the framework
Of that time
Fall on The Hill
Starbucks releases their seasonal pumpkin spice latte and Mars Hill starts to have the autumn glow.
This is the natural order of events for this time of year. Here is your fall update on the quad, do stay tuned for the strengthening glow to come:
Allen (’11) Off to 11 Countries in 11 Months
Kaitlyn Allen, a 2011 grad in Psychology & Religion, is anxious to go on an adventure and see the world while serving God. After much prayer and consideration, Allen applied for The World Race, a Christian mission organization that sends young adults to 11 countries in 11 months to serve the “least of these.”
“I’m going on The World Race because I desire for my life to be giving God utmost attention, affection, adoration and worship. I don’t want my goals to be anything but after God’s own heart. Even if that means being stripped away of modern American amenities, living out of a backpack and camping for 11 months. I feel that takes me seeking people in their hurt, brokenness, & pain, finding the best way to exist with them, and working to bring them restoration and hope of the Father’s great love.”
Allen has an obvious and enthusiastic heart for service. After spending a couple months in Gulfport, MS after Katrina hit and serving 10 weeks in Waco, TX with MissionWaco, Allen spent six weeks in India this past summer working with Asha Children’s Home. Each experience leaves her wanting more, so she departs September 5, 2011 to answer the call.
Kaitlyn’s World Race team, named Perriseuo (Greek meaning “to abound”, “superabound”, and “overflow”)
